I still remember standing in that rental after I was done with it; a place the owners had already written off as too small to sell well. I hadn’t bought a single new thing. I’d pulled the sofa off the wall, swapped two lamps, and cleared two-thirds of the clutter off the shelves. Looking at it, I barely recognized the room myself. That was the moment I stopped believing a good room is something you buy. It’s something you edit.
That belief carried me through almost ten years styling rentals and staging homes for sale, working inside other people’s budgets and other people’s furniture, before I opened HLL Interiors.
It’s why I rarely start with a shopping list. Instead, I start with the items already in the room, considering how the layout affects the space, how the lighting makes it look flat, and how the shelf, after just one styling attempt, looks put together rather than cluttered. Arranging a room so that it flows, layering a bed so that it appears to have been carefully selected, and making a small space seem larger without having to alter the walls.
A home can look stylish yet still feel cold, while too much rustic décor can make it seem dated or cluttered. Creating a space that feels warm, fresh, and practical takes the right balance.
