Diploma in Horticulture; certification in Landscape Architecture

Hello, my name is Jonathan. I was sent to my grandfather’s house every summer as a child, and whether I wanted to be there or not, he would assign me to work in that backyard, pulling weeds, hauling mulch, and holding the hose precisely where he indicated.

I complained the entire time. His vegetable patch still outdid every other yard on the street, and I had no idea why until years later, when I was standing in my own dirt patch wondering why nothing I planted was working.

I ended up doing a diploma in Horticulture, followed later by a short certification course in Landscape Architecture, and worked as a landscaper for a few years.

That job knocked a lot of the theory out of me and replaced it with the real stuff: how people actually use a yard versus how they picture using it, and the two rarely match.

There’s a shady corner in my own backyard now that I’m stupidly proud of, mostly because I killed two rounds of plants there before I gave up fighting the shade and just planted for it instead. That’s where I end up most evenings, coffee in hand, half-convinced my grandfather would still find something to criticize.
